I've been busy with the new job, so updates have been slow..
I just wanted to mention that I've received a response from SourceFire and AIDE and both are interested in participating. SourceFire was really great in offering assistance since I've been so busy lately.
The rest of my unpacking should be done by the end of the week and I hope to have the beta online within a week of that (first weekend in march)
Hey Hey,
So I'm outta town today, apartment hunting in Toronto actually. So I thought I should at least post something before I go so there's something new for you all to read.
The decision was based on a website mentioned on a forum I frequent. That website http://portableapps.com. On this site you can find AbiWord, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Gaim and several other applications, all designed to be portable. Drop them on your usb key and away you go... no need to install, no need for anything but mobility... You can move around and bring everything with you. Now if you're storing your email on this you have to remember that no encryption is provided, however, a copy of TrueCrypt on your disk, with all your portable apps stored in a TrueCrypt container, may keep you nice and safe.
Anyways... that's all until I get back, which will probably be rather late and I'm sure I won't have more than one or two posts... I'm sorry to all of you that are daily readers, but today will be missed.
Peace,
HT
Hey Hey,
So I require a perl script for the cron jobs, as I recently found out... that's no problem, just need to write it haha... Then we should be good to go.
Also I've received a response from OpenSHH.. They already keep a bunch of version trackers updated and are not interested in taking part in this one.. That's fine with me... I've at least made the offer.. If anyone really wants to see this project included and is interested in hosting the version file for it and updating it... let me know...
Peace,
HT

Hey Hey,
So as I've mentioned before, I'm looking for site authors. Included is author access to this forum... Post your programs or source code or blog about random IT events... Possible association with the CDVT software if you so desire (I've gotten my responses back by the way... A beta should be up tomorrow night)... and a computerdefense.org email address.
If you're interested, send me an email ht [at] computerdefense.org
This is news related, but also site related so it can go here.. Google is now offering to host your domains mail, similar to what Microsoft is doing... on gmail accounts (2GB, the Google Search Engine)... a great concept... I've contacted them for the beta and asked if we could put google.computerdefense.org on (as well as aoaddicts.net). If I get a positive, I will be offering google.computerdefense.org (possibly in the end reader.computerdefense.org or user.computerdefense.org) email addresses to all ComputerDefense.org members. It might be kinda cool.
Peace,
HT
Hey Hey,
I'm stealing this from a post on AntiOnline.com by Irongeek. It looks like quite the cool product... Tor (Onion Router software) + Firefox (Web Browser) that will fit on a usb memory key. Now you can be anonymous from anywhere, on Windows... without admin access. I'm not in the testing mood right now... I plan to test it later, however I'm so busy right now that I don't have time to test... testing will come in the future, after I've moved and changed jobs...
In the mean time check it out @ http://www.freehaven.net/~arrakis/ and report back and let the rest of our readers know how it works.
Peace,
HT
Since there's nothing new on this site, I feel no moral objections to publishing it, besides it could come in useful to those studying programming, malware behavior or that are just bored.
From what I've seen the database is comprised of fairly old viruses mostly in assembly, however I have seen a few c files on the site.
The author of the website has this to say "This source code is provided for computer programming history. This source code can be used for good or evil. It can destroy computer data. Be aware that I am making no claims to authorship or usability of the information found in the Virus Source Code Database. I accept no responsibility for data corruption due to the use of the following information. The information contained on this website is for Information Purposes Only!!!"
Anyways, if you're doing research or bored and wanting to learn, the site is worth a look over. Check it out @ http://www.totallygeek.com/vscdb/m/index.php.
Another sort of cool site on the same subject is at 62nds.com. They have the source code for a few of the more well known and more famous viruses. Check it out @ http://www.62nds.co.nz/pg/e90.php.
Another site that you may want to check out while we're on the subject, a little more on the sketchy side, has tutorials on viruses as we as sample source code. Check it out @ http://www.sirkussystem.com/virus.html.

This has got to be the most ridiculous PC mod I've ever seen.... It looks like a lot of time and effort went into it and it's awesome... the result that is... the invested time is what's ridiculous..
The handset on the case is probably my favourite part.... It's definately a wild looking thing.

Hey Hey,
So apparently I've got a few more links for you... Kinda cool stuff... thanks to Call For Help for these links.. they were on todays show or mentioned on today's show..
http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/ -- A very cool way of browsing your hard drive and seeing what's on it and how it's all laid out... Check out the page for screen shots and other cool things..
http://www.geekcruises.com/ -- This is a very cool one... a Cruise for geeks... many cruises for geeks... whatever you want .. it's there... First vacation time I take... this is what I'm going to do... it's awesome.
Another is https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1730&application=firefox -- This is a firefox plugin that allows you to write to your blog just by clicking a button and typing in the pop-up pane... It's cool... Definately adding it to firefox.
Peace,

Hey Hey,
So I do a daily link list... Todays was amazing... I had a whole lot of links, I was really excited about some of them.. then I hit publish and was returned to a blank page without my post... What does this mean... no Daily Link list for you, unless I get bored later.
However I would like to mention a few things to you...
nmap 4.01 was released... it contains bug fixes for nmap 4.00... It can be found at http://www.insecure.org/nmap/
also Google Desktop 3.0 is out... There are some privacy concerns though. Apparently if you use the search across multiple computers feature, google will store your index on their servers... This could be a concern to some people.
Something interesting that I've come across is Liberated Syndication... for anyone interested in PodCasting this may be the place for you to look .... They offer several packages, you get storage capacity, bandwidth, an rss feed and a blog... I'm considering a Computer Defense podcast in the future. Check it out @ https://www.libsyn.com/index.php
Also Patch Tuesday falls on Valentines day this year.... there's going to be a lot of unhappy Geek Spouses out there.. It's looking like 7 security updates... You can find all the details at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/advance.mspx
Peace,
HT
