Torrent Site Admin goes to Jail

Posted in News at 1:13 am by Tyler Reguly

Check it out - http://torrentfreak.com/bittorrent-admin-sent-to-prison/

The 23 year old Grant Stanley has been sentenced to five months in prison, followed by five months of home detention, and a $3000 fine for the work he put in the private BitTorrent tracker Elitetorrents.

I put this in news.... then I thought about it.... Look at the comments... It shows you the little kids associated with Torrents.... the juvenile mentality that still plagues the internet... I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry as I read the comments... so I did a little of both.... The education system is obviously failing if they represent the current products of it...

Peace,
HT

Most of those comments were made by juvenile idiots… But others had a point, such as this one:

“This begs the question why isnt the FBI more focused on real crooks?”

It’s true. There are FAR more pressing issues than software or media piracy. Yes, the media companies are probably exerting quite a bit of pressure on governmental and law enforcing agencies to put an end to piracy, but any sane person will know that this is not going to happen. Punishing Grant isn’t going to stop the rest of the pirates from doing what they do. Heck, just look at the death penalty in the US - that’s worked so well that the US has one of the highest crime rates in the developed world. In other words, punishing the minority is not going to have an effect on the majority, and there’s no way in hell that they would be able to arrest or fine every single software/media pirate ;)

And comments like “all the more reason to support the pirate party” show that, instead of deterring pirates, it has the adverse effect… The best thing they could have done was to let piracy lie. It will always exist, whether agencies, companies and organisations like it or not.

I find it odd that the FBI is targetting BitTorrent activity meanwhile apps like LImewire and Ares are rampantly serving a greater number of people than BitTorrent users. Though it doesn’t excuse the activity to be a minority, it would make far greater sense for resource allocation by the FBI to target the majority, rather than minority users. Just because the protocol enables the users to have a concrete number of users with the file in question, that does not make it “more illegal”. Illegal is illegal, no matter how it is spun and any use of it is a calculated risk that each person makes themselves.

Also, on the note of the education system. I agree that it sucks and it needs an overhaul. But before commenting on people being idiots, maybe your usage of the ellipsis is a bit excessive and nearly brought tears to this college students eyes. But I think in general, our knowledge and ability is a subject of our own willingness to learn and and commit to long term memory, rather than a cue as to our educational system.
