andLinux

Posted in IT, Linux, Operating Systems at 1:01 am by Tyler Reguly

For quite some time now I've been a regular user of Cooperative Linux (coLinux), which I think is best described on its website:

Cooperative Linux is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively. More generally, Cooperative Linux (short-named coLinux) is a port of the Linux kernel that allows it to run cooperatively alongside another operating system on a single machine. For instance, it allows one to freely run Linux on Windows 2000/XP, without using a commercial PC virtualization software such as VMware, in a way which is much more optimal than using any general purpose PC virtualization software

I've been using it for quote some time but I've never bothered to spend the time to take it beyond a console (mind you I see on their website that it'll run Knoppix Japanese Edition with a full GUI). A few months ago andLinux came to my attention. andLinux uses coLinux at it's core and then integrates the Xming server, allowing you to easily run Windows and XWindows applications side by side, both running natively. I think this is absolutely amazing, and something that is definitely needed. My laptop currently have notepad and firefox open on the Windows side and XFCE panel, firefox and Gnome Terminal (with apt-get install build-essential) open on the Linux side. It brings quite a bit of power and flexibility to the table.

I recently went from Ubuntu back to Windows on my laptop because I purchased a Vonage V-Phone. andLinux allows me to easily and conveniently maintain my favourite Linux apps along side my favourite Windows applications. If you've never used it, I highly recommend jumping over to the website and checking it out.

InstaLinux.com

This is just going to be a quick post... I came across a fairly cool website earlier today and thought I should share it with everyone. InstaLinux.com. The concept is fairly cool. They provide a list of several Linux distros and you build yourself an automated install CD...

User Mode Linux (UML)

Posted in IT, Linux, Operating Systems at 12:34 am by Tyler Reguly

Linux.com has an interesting report by Mark Abramowitz. It discusses User Mode Linux (UML) and links to handy setup instructions and also provides plenty of additional details. It seems that UML is a way to run Linux inside Linux... Think Virtualization like Xen without the need for a special compiled kernel. Definitely worth the read.

New Releases - Linux Style!

Posted in IT, Linux, Operating Systems, Uncategorized at 8:54 pm by Tyler Reguly

So we've had some new releases in the Linux world lately.... Among these have been SuSE 10.1 and Backtrack 1.0 Final... And shortly we'll have a new Ubuntu as well...

As you're all free to visit the associated websites and find details, I won't spew too many (Not just yet anyways... I'm planning a full review of Backtrack in the future).

However, in the mean time... to help these great people conserve their bandwidth (Although, I'm sure Novell doesn't need the help), I've decided to mirror the software here..

Download Backtrack

Download SuSE

Xgl - Linux Desktops Just got a Whole Lot Cooler

Posted in IT, Linux, Operating Systems at 11:01 am by Tyler Reguly

Hey Hey,

This was just posted and I figured I'd share it here... It's a rather cool feat. True 3D desktoping (another new word from HT). Basically you have true transparancy... not just the background show, but the window behind it... The ability to bed the corners as you move a 3D cube to go from virtual desktop to virtual desktop... And so much more. I think I'll have to test this out later on today... Maybe it's time for my Desktop to go Linux-Based... I've been considering it for a while now...

Check it out @ http://www.novell.com/linux/xglrelease/.

Backtrack Live CD

Posted in IT, Linux, Operating Systems at 4:15 pm by Tyler Reguly

Hey Hey,

A new live cd has been released by the creators of two famous security bootables, WHAX and Auditor. The new project, called Backtrack, launched it's first beta this weekend.

After playing with the CD I must say that I'm rather impressed. The collection of tools is extensive, everything is easy to find. I will say that if you boot the GUI, remember that not everything available is in your 'start menu' explore the directories a little and you'll find plenty of other little toys to experiment with.

Backtrack is built, as WHAX was, on SLAX (slackware live cd). Since it follows the SLAX format, you can load modules in much the same way. Irongeek has created a create tutorial on how to add these modules in and how to obtain more modules. You can find his tutorial @ http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=videos/myslax.

The website for Backtrack, with several download mirrors, is available @ http://www.remote-exploit.org/index.php/BackTrack. I have also placed a mirror to the beta iso on one of my server and you can obtain it from http://www.aoaddicts.net/backtrack/backtrack-beta-05022006.iso if you find their mirrors bogged down.

I plan to play with the CD some more, maybe create some tutorials based on it... however it is fairly completely and a handy tool to have around.

Peace,
HT
